Key Industries and Sectors
Leading Sectors
Regina's economy includes, but is certainly not limited to, six key industry sectors:
Steel and Manufacturing
This sector has been a driving force in the Regina economy for many years and as a result, is, in many ways the most established. While many companies are competitors within the region, they share many of the same challenges and opportunities on the road to growth.
For more information on Saskatchewan’s competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector, please review the fact sheet on Manufacturing produced by the provincial Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation here.
Information Technology
This established sector is ever changing and working to create an environment that fosters and promotes opportunities for the IT industry to develop products, services, and expertise that ultimately results in growing export revenues.
Film & Interactive Media
Anchored by outstanding production facilities at the Canada Saskatchewan Production Studios,
located in Regina, this is a sector that is seeing exciting growth. The Saskatchewan Film Employment Tax Credit Program (SFETC) is one of the most comprehensive and competitive tax incentive programs available in the world.
Energy and Environment
With the establishment of the Communities of Tomorrow project, and the University of Regina’s, Centre for Sustainable Communities, Regina is ideally suited to further grow into a centre of knowledge and commerce on leading energy technologies. Given Regina’s proximity to near-zero emission poly-generation and clean coal generation, as well as wind, solar, and geothermal energies, energy conservation can be a part of our success.
Finance & Insurance
Regina is the finance and insurance hub for Saskatchewan and it is a strong component of the Regina economy. This sector is directly linked with all other sectors and as such, one of its primary roles is to assist in providing financial services and knowledge to existing and growing sectors.
Agri-Business
With a deeply rooted and long-standing history in the province, this sector is a mix of new and established producers, manufacturers, and service providers who are active in expanding their already existing business, developing new products and establishing new markets.
Emerging Sectors
We recognize that defining our economy is not a quick process and this is reflected in our efforts to look at both the short term and long term needs of the community. A large part of our focus is on answering this question… “What will define Regina’s economy in the future?”
A few of Regina region’s identified economic opportunities are:
Environment and Energy Technologies
Regina is ideally suited to grow into a centre of knowledge and commerce on leading energy technologies. Research at the university level as well as a number of pilot projects and environmentally-oriented firms and non-profit organizations are currently doing work at Innovation Place Regina.
Movement of Goods, Distribution, and Logistics
Regina is well positioned to become a transportation “hub” due to its central location and the development potential and ability to link air, road and rail unlike anywhere in North America.
Talent
Economies most effective at attracting and retaining talent are going to be comparatively prosperous in the years ahead. Regina is emerging as a preferable place to live, work, and raise a family and has a greater portion of school age youth than most competitors. We are working hard to attract and retain talent and become a community of choice.
